The British lords of hilarious mayhem, Taskmaster, have officially thrown open the gates for American comedic talent, and their dream guest list is making waves! For years, fans have wondered if the show's unique brand of absurd challenges and delightful chaos would ever cross the Atlantic in a significant way. Well, the dam has broken! After the groundbreaking appearances of Jason Mantzoukas and the upcoming turn by Kumail Nanjiani, the masterminds behind Taskmaster are feeling bolder than ever about who they'd love to see tackle their bizarre tasks.
In a recent chat, creator Alex Horne and host Greg Davies spilled the beans on their ultimate American wishlist. Horne, admitting his knowledge of the U.S. comedy scene isn't as deep as his British counterpart, still dropped some seriously big names. He mentioned his long-held admiration for comedians like Sarah Silverman and Ali Wong, and expressed a particular fondness for Mike Birbiglia. The duo seems to relish the idea of bringing established stars, who typically command the spotlight, down to the delightfully silly level of Taskmaster. "We like the idea of having a higher status coming down to our level," Horne explained.
But here's where it gets particularly exciting: Conan O'Brien is at the very top of their list. Greg Davies gushed about the legendary talk show host, envisioning a hilarious spectacle of Conan, known for his quick wit and commanding presence, being forced to adhere to the often-arbitrary rules of Taskmaster. "It would be funny to see him have to stick to the rules. That would be amazing," Davies enthused, adding, "And obviously, we’re huge fans of his."
Now, do we genuinely believe Conan O'Brien would willingly subject himself to the unpredictable indignities that are a hallmark of Taskmaster? It's a fair question! After all, this is a show where creative problem-solving and a fearless embrace of terrible ideas are essential for survival. But here's the part most people miss: We might have thought the same thing about him taking on a cameo in a video game as a post-apocalyptic delivery driver or starring in a reality show about annoying people in Iceland. So, who are we to try and predict the moves of such a uniquely brilliant and adventurous mind? His willingness to dive into unexpected projects suggests anything is possible!
Davies and Horne also offered some insightful observations on how their American guests have differed. Horne noted that while Kumail Nanjiani was just as hilarious as Jason Mantzoukas, he approached the show with a different energy. "He didn’t destroy everything. And he was very polite," Horne said, contrasting Nanjiani's more controlled, yet still star-powered, presence with Mantzoukas's more anarchic style. "He felt like he had Hollywood energy when he walked in the room… In the best way. He’s just sort of a star."
What do you think? Is Conan O'Brien the ultimate dream contestant for Taskmaster? Or is there another American comedian you'd love to see navigate the show's absurd challenges? Let us know in the comments below – we'd love to hear your thoughts!
