A Familiar Face Returns to Minnesota! The Minnesota Twins are reportedly bringing back a beloved left-handed reliever, Taylor Rogers, on a one-year deal worth $2 million. This move marks a significant reunion for a pitcher who has a deep history with the club.
A Journey Back Home: Taylor Rogers is no stranger to the Twin Cities. The Twins originally drafted him back in 2012 from the University of Kentucky. He made his highly anticipated major league debut with them in 2016 and even earned an All-Star nod during his last full season in Minnesota in 2021. It was a bittersweet departure when he was traded to the San Diego Padres in April 2022.
During his extensive tenure with the Twins, Rogers showcased his talent, accumulating a record of 17 wins and 18 losses with 50 saves. He maintained an impressive earned run average (ERA) of 3.15, issuing 76 walks while striking out a remarkable 361 batters over 314 2/3 innings in 319 relief appearances. That's a lot of innings of solid work!
A Whirlwind 2025 Season: Last season, 2025, proved to be quite eventful for Rogers, as he played for two different teams, technically being part of three organizations. He started with the Cincinnati Reds, where he posted a 2-2 record with a 2.45 ERA, 19 walks, and 34 strikeouts in 33 innings across 40 relief outings. Then, in a significant trade on July 30th, the Reds sent him to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of a package for Ke’Bryan Hayes. Just a day later, on the trade deadline, the Pirates flipped him to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league outfielder Ivan Brethowr. With the Cubs, Rogers went 1-0 with a 5.09 ERA, 4 walks, and 19 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings over 17 relief appearances.
Career Highlights and Family Ties: Looking at his entire career, Rogers boasts a record of 31-36 with 83 saves, a 3.34 ERA, 165 walks, and 626 strikeouts over 541 1/3 innings in 566 games (without any starts!). His journey has taken him through various teams, including the Twins (2016-21), Padres (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2022), San Francisco Giants (2023-24), the Reds, and the Cubs. Interestingly, Taylor is the twin brother of right-handed pitcher Tyler Rogers, who also found a new home this past December, signing with the Toronto Blue Jays as a free agent.
But here's where it gets interesting... While the return of a familiar and talented arm is exciting, the Twins are making a significant bet on Rogers at $2 million for one year. Is this a wise investment for a pitcher who has bounced around recently, or a low-risk, high-reward move? What are your thoughts on this signing?
