Unveiling the Updated Wuling Hongguang Mini EV: A Cute Electric City Car (2026)

The Chinese automotive market is buzzing with the unveiling of the refreshed Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, a tiny yet mighty urban electric vehicle. But wait, there's a twist! This isn't your typical generational update; it's a strategic move to reignite sales.

A Pocket-Sized Revolution

The original Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, launched by SAIC-GM-Wuling in 2020, took China by storm. It's hard to believe this compact EV became the country's bestselling car in 2022. Wuling claims four generations of the Mini EV, but here's where it gets tricky: two of these are special editions of the initial model. So, the real second-generation Mini EV arrived in February 2025, offering five doors and a budget-friendly price tag of 44,800 yuan (6,545 USD).

Sales Slump and a Swift Response

Despite its initial success, the second-gen Mini EV faced a sales decline in January, with only 7,133 units sold. Wuling is now gearing up for a comeback with an updated variant. This refreshed model, dubbed the 'fifth generation' by Wuling, is more of a facelift than a complete overhaul. It features five doors, adorable circular headlights, and a style reminiscent of the Geely Panda Mini. The updated EV is slightly larger, measuring 3268/1520/1575 mm, and offers a choice of gray, green, or beige body colors, surprisingly excluding classic white and black.

A Two-Door Twist

In a surprising move, Wuling applied for a sales license for a two-door version of the updated Mini EV in December 2025. This variant has slightly different dimensions but shares the same 30 kW (42 hp) electric motor. The interior accommodates four seats, but battery and range details remain under wraps.

The Future of Affordable EVs

With the updated Wuling Hongguang Mini EV poised for a Chinese market launch, it's expected to maintain a similar price range to its predecessor. This strategic refresh aims to recapture the market's attention and boost sales. But will it succeed? Only time will tell. And this is the part most people miss: is this a clever marketing strategy or a genuine attempt to improve the EV? Share your thoughts below!
